The NGO National Coordinating Coalition Inc. is conducting a second round of comprehensive training this week on preventing and responding to gender-based violence (GBV). The four-day program in the township of Mahdia, will provide critical skills to law enforcement officials and medical personnel in the regional capital and surrounding villages.
Building on earlier training successes, this initiative aims to further improve access to care and services for GBV survivors. A key focus is strengthening partnerships with the local migrant community. NGO NCC will carry out sensitization outreaches in four villages in collaboration with village councils.
This training is the result of an agreement made in June of 2023 by the then newly appointed Divisional Commander Mr Khalid Mandall who indicated the Guyana Police Force’s intention to have a multi-agency approach in this and other areas as part of their 5-year strategic plan.
Participants will receive coaching on gender sensitivity, trauma-informed procedures, legal protocols, and survivor-centered care approaches. Role-playing scenarios will build practical skills in areas like evidence collection and statements. The sessions will equip law enforcement with techniques to improve investigations, ensure due process, and build trust with migrant communities. Medical teams will gain proficiency in clinical management, psychosocial support, safety planning, and referral pathways.
The team led by GBV Specialist Ms. Buedeen Williams met with the Deputy Regional Executive Officer Mr. Kilkelly and Regional Health Officer Dr. Cort who both reassured the team of their commitment to ensure all the resources will be available to the team to have a successful week of training. The sessions will be held at the RDC boardroom and is expected to have scores of the targeted civil servants.
