On the second day, the team accompanied by Community Support Officer Vereneak Deally traveled about three miles up the Kaituma River to a Warao settlement at Annabisi. This community has a population of about 120 settlers who came over to Guyana from Venezuela on canoes in some cases braving the Atlantic Ocean to seek refuge in Guyana.
The time was spent listening, observing, and documenting the challenges faced by these migrants. Some of these needs are medical, and sanitary & hygiene supplies and other essentials. The work of the NCC was reiterated to the gathering of over 50 people in this particular area. Care packages were distributed which brought this outreach to an end.FOLLOW UP
Matters emanating from yesterday’s outreach with some migrants specifically issues on the process of receiving permits and renewals. Attorney at Law Mr. Hugh Park re-engaged the authorities to address these issues and provide feedback to the group.
Attending the meeting were Assistant Superintendent Kooldeep, Station Officer Sergeant Kanaya, and the immigration officer on assignment in the sub-district. The discussion clarified the process and provided reasons for the perceived frustrations. The major one is the language barrier and the information lost during the translation. A commitment was made to possibly compile and publish material to distribute in the community, also the Superintendent committed to maintaining contact with the CSO being a point of contact should these and related issues arise.
The officers were thanked for their time and cooperation in providing service to the migrant community on Gender-Based Violence and Xenophobia.
