The NGO National Coordinating Coalition Inc. kicked off a comprehensive two-day training program on gender-based violence (GBV) response for law enforcement officers in the township of Mahdia this week.
In his opening remarks, Inspector Noel Williams reinforced the police force’s pledge to collaborate closely with NGOs like NCC and community members to effectively prevent and address GBV cases in the region.
“Tackling issues of domestic abuse, sexual assault and the appropriate support for survivors must be a joint effort between our officers, social services, and the communities we serve,” Inspector Williams stated.
Over the two days, NCC’s GBV specialists Ms. Buedeen Williams and Mr. Quincy Richards will lead intensive training sessions aimed at strengthening the capacity of Mahdia’s law enforcers to handle GBV cases with greater empathy, sensitivity and effectiveness.
The program will equip officers with vital skills in areas such as trauma-informed interviewing techniques, evidence-collection protocols for sexual assault, safety planning for GBV victims, referral pathways to support services, and more.
Role-playing exercises will enable participants to practice applying their enhanced knowledge in simulated case scenarios. The facilitators will work closely with officers to identify gaps in existing response mechanisms and develop concrete plans for improvement.
The is for Mahdia’s force to become a model for GBV response across the region – where survivors feel heard, respected and supported in accessing justice. This program is in partnership with the Local Engagement and Action Fund – LEAF & Guyana Police Force .
The National Coordinating Coalition reiterates its firm commitment to providing ongoing training and working hand-in-hand with Mahdia law enforcement to implement strengthened GBV response and care.
