– Outreach and information sharing at the Port Kaituma Police Station and Regional Democratic Office.
May 16, 2023
The two-day outreach got underway with the sharing of printed material to the public. This included the main street, the market place and the waterfront of the port. Flyers were posted on key public agency buildings and materials were handed over to the regional office. The team comprised Psychologist Michelle Amsterdam, Case Navigator Vanessa Holder, CSO Vereneak Deally, ICT Consultant Ishaka Jackman, and Attorney at Law Hugh Park.
During the engagement, Ms Amsterdam engaged the station officer of the Port Kaituma Police Station Sergeant Kanaya inquired about the GBV unit and some of the challenges faced. He explained that their unit would perform their duties as per training, however, specific execution is hindered in the absence of a dedicated room for such cases. As the engagement continued the idea was discussed on a collaboration between the NGO NCC and Police Station to have a one-month tenure for GBV officer and councillor performing ongoing training, outreaches, and casework in a few subdistricts of the region.
To end the morning session the team handed over a resource directory and other material to the Community Development Officer attached to the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs Ms. Ann Marie Roberts at the Regional Democratic Office.
The team will end day one with a planned meeting with members of the migrant community where presentations will be made on the services of the NGO NCC and our partners along with sensitization talks by the CSO, Case Navigator, and Attorney at Law. The Psychologist will be on-site to provide counseling and other related services.
